Storms of Jupiter
In 2011, Juno took off from Earth, arriving in the Jupiter system in 2016, and has given a new perspective on the largest planet in our Solar System and it’s satellites.
Jupiter had been renowned for it’s cloud bands and giant red spot, an ancient storm, thought to have been raging on for several hundred years. It was first observed in 1831, but another red spot was depicted in observations taken from 1664-1713, we just don’t know if that was the very same red spot.
The reason we cannot be sure is Jupiter doesn’t just have a single storm, it’s is covered in them, and more recently, storms have been seen to combine, and change colour, to the same red colour in the great red spot.
Juno has shown the beautiful complexity of these storms and cloud structures on Jupiter, and helped us peel back the layers in the upper atmosphere and gain new knowledge about it.
